ACB Event Results: The 2008 ICCA and ICHSA Finals
By Mike Chin on Apr 20, 2008 in Event Reviews, Featured, News
Mike Chin checking in here after quite a night in New York. Out of this show, I bear some good news and some bad news.
Bad news: This year’s ICCA finals, on the whole, did not live up to the previous year’s show. No offense to the competitors, but looking at the evening as one big showcase, there just weren’t as many big moments or finals level performances to knock me for a loop this time out.
Good news: The SoCal VoCals’ winning set gave them perhaps the best-deserved victory I’ve ever seen at an ICCA show. This is the sort of set that needs to be seen to be believed and I am proud to have been a witness to something truly fantastic. Believe the hype–this was probably the best competition set I’ve ever seen.
Bad news: Cameras were not allowed into this year’s finals, and so, while I did steal a small number of photos in the lobby after the show, I do not have any live images from the performance.
Good news: The ACB will have a comprehensive event review posted by Tuesday night at the latest, painting an image of the event through the eloquence of words. For those who really want literal pictures, though, photos should be available again from http://gallery.rossmedia.com/icca too.
The official ICCA results were as follows:
Overall Placement:
3. The NYU N’Harmonics
2. Florida State University All-Night Yahtzee
1. The University of Southern California SoCal VoCals
Outstanding Soloist: Ithacappella for “Isn’t She Lovely”
Outstanding Vocal Percussion: Ithacappella for the full set
Outstanding Choreography: All-Night Yahtzee and the SoCal VoCals
Outstanding Arrangement:The N’Harmonics for “High and Dry”
And the official ICHSA results wre:
Overall Placement:
2. The Leon High School Mane Event
1. The West Cherry Hill High School Men of Note
Outstanding Soloists: Men of Note for their Temptations medley
Outstanding Arrangement: Men of Note for “Can’t Help Falling In Love With You”
Outstanding Choreography: Men of Note for the full set.
No major complaints from me on any of this. I would have placed Ithacapella third, but at the same time, would not given them the awards, so I think that balances out. It was a shame to see Crimson leave empty handed on the high school side–I had them down for a second place finish, and in close consideration for outstanding soloist. But so it goes.
Much, much more to come…
As one of the competitors (that placed), it’s kind of hard NOT to feel a little offended…

Come on guys get over yourselves.
I mean - yes you have a right to feel offended but people are entitled to their opinions and this blog has done a great job of giving an honest representation of these events.
I was at the show and as a whole thought it was OUTSTANDING, but from beginning to end I can see where this blog is coming from saying it fell a little short with those “Wow this is the finals I better be blown out of the water” moments. That’s not to say any one specific group was bad or worse than last year.
Overall a job very very well done and I’m looking forward to what this blog and others thought about the night!

It seems as though the West Region has a sleeper-hold on the ICCA Championship. Three years in a row! And I would even argue that Divisi was better than the Dear Abbeys in 2005, which could be FOUR in a row … can you say DYNASTY?
